Lions Appeal Gets Into Focus
Hundreds of pairs of spectacles are on route to the third world thanks to Ayrshire Lions and opticians.
For Ayr and Prestwick Lions Club teamed up with Kilgour Optometrists, Ian Faith Opticians and Boots Opticians to collect scores of frames and lenses.
The aids are now on route to some of the poorest people in the world via Medico France.
The French centre provides recycled spectacles for distribution by doctors and humanitarian groups.
In the past, Medico France has provided spectacles to Cambodia, Tanzania, Rwanda, Madagascar, Romania, Tajikistan, Zambia, Gambia, Lebanon, Sri Lanka and most recently to Brazil, countries in western and central Africa: Cameroon, Ghana, Niger and Burkina Faso.
Plans for the future include distributions to Cameroon, Morocco and possibly Lubumbashi.
Lions Clubs throughout the UK are involved in the scheme and have most recently developed, with the help of the Inside Out Trust, facilities for grading spectacles in the UK and have shipped directly to Ghana, Papau New Guinea, Nepal and Nigeria.
Last year, UK Lions Clubs provided more than half of the spectacles processed by Medico France.
Optifree EverMoist
Optifree Replenish has been one of our first choice soft contact lens solutions for a number of years. As with contact lenses, solutions are continually upgrading to ensure that they are keeping your lenses clean and comfortable.
Alcon laboratories have now upgraded Optifree Replenish to Optifree EverMoist. This is a new innovative product which provides comfort from insertion to removal, delivering up to 16 hours of moisture. It still retains the same advanced cleaning properties and exceptional disinfection.
Please ask your Optometrist if you would be suitable for a starter pack.
New look for Troon Practice
Our Troon practice is now 15 years old and we decided it was time for a major re-fit. This unfortunately meant a two week shut down but we hope you will agree that The inconvenience caused has been worthwhile. The whole 'front of house' area has been re-designed creating a much more modern reception and dispensing area. New lighting completes the bright and spacious feel. For those patients who attend our Troon practice we do hope you enjoy the new surroundings.
Children and Reading Difficulties
Does your child have reading, writing or spelling difficulties at school?
The ability to read is fundamental for any child to progress successfully through their educational years. Any difficulties with this essential skill can have a profound effect on a child's ability to achieve a successful education. This in turn can lead to more limited life and employment prospects.
Uncorrected visual problems can affect a child's ability to read and therefore any child who has reading difficulties at school should have an eye examination. This will identify uncorrected visual problems and in some cases indicate when further tests for Dyslexia and Meares Irlen Syndrome should be done. Meares Irlen Syndrome is when a child may experience glare, eye strain, headaches or visual distortions, such as words blurring, doubling or jumping.

NEW NHS REGULATIONS
In line with new NHS guidelines it is now routine practice to instill eyedrops during an eyetest for anybody over the age of 60. These drops enlarge the pupils and allow the optometrist to carefully examine the back of your eyes. This can help detect any problems with the eyes before they become serious. The drops may make you more sensitive to bright light and blur your vision slightly for a few hours therefore it is not advisable to drive following the appointment and you may find it helpful to bring sunglasses.
EXTENDED HOURS IN TROON
To accommodate patients seeking early morning appointments in Troon, the practice can now offer appointments starting at 8.35 am Mon - Fri. The practice will now be open at 8.30 am.
